The School Resource Police position provides a police officer in both the Monona Grove High School and Glacial Drumlin Middle School. Through a cooperative effort with the Monona Grove School District and the Monona Police Department this program provides for a police officer to assist the administration in issues that would need police intervention. In addition to providing legal assistance the officer is an invaluable tool to teachers and staff. The officer is available for classroom instruction addressing a wide range of subjects.

The Monona Police School Resource position was created in 1996 through a cooperative effort between the Monona Grove School District and the Monona Police Department. The position is currently held by Off. Shawn Fogeltanz of the Monona Police Department. Each week the Resource Officer works three full days and two half days at the Monona Grove High School and two half days at Glacial Drumlin Middle School in Cottage Grove.
The school Resource officer is responsible for working with the youth in the school district through preventive education and increased communications. The responsibilities of the school Resource officer is to work closely with school administrators, staff, students and parents to help educate them through class room instructions and one on one communications. The school Resource officer also works directly with administrators in issuing citations and referrals for those students that violate both local and state laws.
Through education it is our goal to make students aware of their legal responsibilities and how the law can affect them. Students are instructed on topics such as alcohol awareness, retail theft, gun safety, constitutional law, personal safety, illegal drugs use, traffic law and even career opportunities in law enforcement.
Thanks to the school district the school Resource officer is able to educate students on alcohol awareness by the use of Drunk Buster Goggles. In the classroom the students are able to use these goggles to give them a awareness of the dangers of alcohol , it use and a true realization of what it is like getting into a vehicle of a person who has been drinking. The students are also made of aware of consequences for their actions and how to safely get out of a situation they might find themselves in.
Through educational presentations high school students learn about their basic constitutional rights, police interviews and interrogations, retail theft, personal safety and career opportunities. One very important element at all levels of education is that the students see the school Resource officer as some one they can trust and go to if they need help. Many students confide in the school Resource officer about legal issues and personal issues. Often times students are the first to know about a situation that may risk the safety of other students, staff and community. Through the school Resource officer relationship with students often times potential problems can be dealt with before they become a major problem and allow the school Resource officer to intervene and take the appropriate action.
The school Resource officer has also participated in educating students on pedestrian safety by help organizing a Walk our Children to School Day and presenting programs to Middle school students on bicycle safety.
A 1999 study through the Wisconsin Safe School Task Force which was a cooperative effort between the State Attorney General office and Department of Public Instruction recommended that a police school Resource officer should be available in every school in Wisconsin. A police school Resource officer main job is to make our schools a safe learning environment for students and staff. We continue to do so through this very important program and to assure students, staff and parents in the Monona Grove School District our commitment to them.
Beginning with the 2008-2009 school year the Monona Police Department School Resource Officer will be providing assistance at the new Glacial Drumlin School in Cottage Grove. This is the result of an agreement with the Monona Grove School District, the City of Monona and the Village and Township of Cottage Grove.
